Where You Belong

Written by Zach ‘Seal’ McGuckin: Lazy F Camp Summer 2019

Dear Future Camper,

If there is one thing I want you to know about camp, it’s that this is a place where you belong. I’ve been coming to Lazy F since I was a primary camper and at every stage of my life I was welcomed with open arms. Camp has always been a place where I felt at home, where I’ve been challenged to grow but accepted where I’m at. Now that I’m staff, there is one thing I’m excited about and that’s you.

I’m excited to provide this same opportunity, this same sense of belonging and acceptance to you. I’m excited to meet you, know you and learn from you. I’m excited to see you grow, to make new friends, to stand up for what you believe in, to eat way too much in the dining hall, to find a camp game you really like or a camp song for you to scream at the top of your lungs. I’m excited for you to be here in your entirety, not leaving out the things that make you goofy, weird or out there. I can’t wait to hear you laugh or hear your funniest joke.

Camp can be busy, activity after activity thrown at us. It’s amazing and really fun, but also very tiring. By the end of the week, you’ll probably be exhausted and ready to sleep in your own bed. I’d ask that once you get home and back to life, remember camp. If someone is mean to you at school, remember camp. Remember that in this place you are loved for who you are and that you belong. No matter what happens you will always belong in this place.
