Goodbyes Are Hard

Written by Brianna ‘Happy Feet’ Smith: Lazy F Camp Summer 2019

Dear Camper,

Saying goodbye is never easy. Even if it is for a day, week, month, or even years, all goodbyes are hard. Saying goodbye to the people we meet at camp can be some of the hardest goodbyes you ever have to say. I myself have had many Fridays full of tears, so you are not alone if you feel the same. The people we meet at camp change our lives and the way we want to live our lives outside of camps boundaries.

I would not be the person I am today without camp and the people that I have met here. Both as a camper and as a staff member, my friends impact my life. Saying goodbye to the summer doesn’t get easier the more times you do it though. I still don’t want to leave Lazy F at the end of August and I know some of you don’t want to leave at the end of the week. Something to remember as you drive down the Manastash is that even if you are leaving camp physically what you have learned at camp will never leave you. I remember being a camper and packing my suitcase and wishing that there was a Lazy F School that I could attended with all my friends year-round. I sometimes still wish that, but I have learned a camp secret that I want to share you all. It’s not a cheesy phrase like a hard goodbye makes the hellos sweeter. This is what I have learned, saying goodbyes may make you cry and wish you had more time but you also look back and remember being happy (sometimes that happiest you have ever been). Saying a goodbye and hugging someone lets you know that there are people that love you and miss you every day. No matter what you do or where you are, camp people love you and that makes being in the ‘real world’ a lot easier.

We love you. You are loved and will always be loved. No matter how many times we may tell you to walk around a bench, drink water, walk and not run, listen to directions before getting seconds, know that we love you. We love you no matter the week or season. Remember that you are a beloved child of God. Sometimes school and work are hard, in those moments remember the hardest goodbyes and know that those people love you.

Just as Mr. Rodgers said “You don’t ever have to do anything sensational for people to love you”. And we love all of you. Thank you for joining us this summer and for saying your goodbyes. So goodbye summer and goodbye camp we will see you all next year and we will love you until then and after.

All my love and my goodbyes,

Happy Feet
